Confession/Penance 1. What does this Sacrament do?
Mortal or venial sins committed after Baptism are forgiven and grace is increased in the soul.
2. When did our Lord institute the Sacrament of Penance? When he breathed on his Apostles and said: 'Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven.' John 20:23
3. How does the priest forgive sins?
He represents the Bishop who represents the apostles and gives the words of absolution.
4. What makes a good confession?
~ Contrition: great sorrow for our sins revealed by prayer and memory
~ Confession: tell all sins to a priest
~ Penance: doing what the priest prescribes
~ Firm purpose of amendment: resolve to avoid sin and occasions that lead to sin.

6. How often should we go to Confession?
When we are guilty of serious sin, but at least once a year.
