Commandments Two and Three 'Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain'
1. What does this Commandment require?
~ Speak with reverence of God and all holy persons and things
~ Keep our lawful oaths and vows
2. What does the second Commandment forbid?
~ False, rash, unjust, and unnecessary oaths
~ Blasphemy: insulting God, the Church or any holy thing
~ Cursing: wishing evil on a person or object
~ Profanity: 'bad' words and expressions
3. When is it lawful to swear or to take an oath?
For the honor or God, ourselves or others.
'Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day’
4. Why is Sunday the Christian Sabbath instead of the Old Testament day of Saturday?
It is the day Christ rose from the dead and the Holy Spirit descended.
5. How are we to keep the Sabbath holy?
By praying and participating in Mass and resting from servile works.
6. Why must we rest from servile works?
To allow more time for prayer, Sacraments, teaching and reading good books.
